Over the past year, we’ve partnered with everyone from Cricket Australia to the Bangladesh Bookfair, keeping large, live events safe with our scientific expertise and hygiene protocols.
Our partnership with the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games put Dettol to the test on a whole new scale. Katy Slater, Regulatory Director – New Growth Platforms, shared her insights (and a few behind-the-scenes details) from our massive mobilisation at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
First things first: Targeted hygiene
Our ability to turn scientific insights on germ protection into actionable hygiene protocols made us the Official Hygiene Partner of choice for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.
We showed up to help one million visitors and over 10,000 athletes, volunteers and cleaning crew members enjoy a safe and hygienic Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Our team deployed over 2,800 sanitising stations (100 of which talk to you!) across 15 venues, making sure we used the right interventions at the right time to break the chain of infection.
Learning as we go: This experience enriched our scientific understanding
This massive deployment enriched our scientific understanding of hygiene at large, live events, which has already taken us around the world. From Cricket Australia to COP26 and Dubai Expo, we’re now imparting this knowledge to our global partners.
At Reckitt, we’ve always used motivations, effective nudge theory and choice architecture within our hygiene protocols. But their importance has become more apparent than ever in driving positive hygiene behaviour as we begin to readjust to our old ways of living.

Durex @ the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games
But the action wasn’t just in the stadium. Durex provided 100,000 condoms to the Athlete Villages to ensure athletes were able to keep their entire Commonwealth Games experience as safe and hygienic as possible.
Meanwhile, across our Reckitt sites...
Almost 200 colleagues got involved, by entering competitions to:
- win tickets to a sporting event
- receive a pair of coveted Together Bands
- host the Birmingham 2022 Official Mascot, Perry, at their child’s school
- get a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be a Birmingham 2022 VIP, attending a number of events in person, starting with the Opening Ceremony.
20 colleagues were also chosen to run in the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay, delivering the Queen’s Baton safely on its journey to Birmingham.
We can’t wait to share where we’re off to next. Watch this space!
